At the beginning of each semester, all Composition for Multilingual Students (CMS) faculty members are available for advising. This usually occurs two days after the administration of the Composition for Multilingual Students Placement Test (CMSPT).
Students may also obtain advice about completing their written and oral graduation requirements in the CMS Program at any time by visiting the program’s office in Humanities 482. If the appropriate adviser is not available, students can make an appointment for the earliest convenient time.
Generally, advising for any individual student is based on two main factors: SFSU graduation requirements and the skill level of the student (in reading, writing and grammatical accuracy), which is usually assessed by taking the CMSPT. Advisers attempt to find the most effective way for students to fulfill requirements and achieve skill competency when making course recommendations.
New transfer students, as well as students studying in the English composition program, may be eligible to complete their written graduation requirements in the CMS program. These students are encouraged to visit our office to obtain more information about taking English classes in the CMS program.
