Lu Rehling earned her Ph.D., A.M., and A.B. degrees in English Language & Literature from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. For over 15 years, Lu worked primarily in industry, as a writer, editor, trainer, manager, and consultant. She also held teaching appointments at Westminster College, Salt Lake Community College, and the University of Utah.
Since coming to SF State in 1994, Lu has designed and taught Technical and Professional Writing courses. Until 2009, she also directed the TPW Program. Additionally, she continued her work in industry as a consultant and (during a two-year leave of absence) as a Silicon Valley technical publications manager.
Lu has published in the major journals for scholars and practitioners in the field of technical and professional writing, and she also has authored chapters for academic books. Her research has focused on ethics, technology, teamwork, and curriculum design. Additionally, Lu has won awards for her industry publications, held leadership roles in both academic and professional associations, and been actively involved in campus service. She continues to participate in regional college accreditation visits.
Lu currently teaches TPW courses online in Spring semester: Fundamentals of TPW, Professional Editing, and the service-learning course Individual & Team Writing.
