Minors

 

The English Department offers three different minors for undergraduate students. If you are interested in learning more about any of the minors, contact the coordinator of the corresponding major program or contact engdept@sfsu.edu.

Minor in Literature (15 units)

  • ENG 250 - Topics in Literature and Culture (3 Units)
  • Select One:
    • ENG 460 - Literature in English to 1800
    • ENG 461 - Literature in English Since 1800
  • ENG 640 - Global Texts and Practices (3 Units)
  • Two Upper Disision Courses in Literature (one may be a non-ENG prefixed course with advisor approval) (6 units)

Minor in Linguistics (21 units)

Core Courses (18 units):

  • ENG 420: Introduction to the Study of Language
  • ENG 421: Syntax
  • ENG 424: Phonology and Morphology
  • ENG 425: Language in Context
  • Select two lower or upper division courses in literature

Select one of the following courses (3 units):

  • ENG 422: History of the English Language
  • ENG 426: Second Language Acquisition
  • ENG 429: Stylistics

 

Minor in Professional Writing and Rhetoric (15 units)

Core Courses (9 units):

  • ENG 402: Introduction to Professional Writing and Rhetoric
  • ENG 540: Professional Editing
  • ENG 545: Visual Rhetoric and Document Design

Skills Electives - choose two from the following (6 units):

  • ENG 200: Writing Practices in Professional Contexts    
  • ENG 471: Writing Technical Documentation   
  • ENG 490: Grantwriting    
  • ENG 585: Writing for Digital Audiences
  • ENG 618: Individual and Team Writing (must have already taken ENG 402, 540, & 545)
