Minors

 

The English Department offers three different minors for undergraduate students. If you are interested in learning more about any of the minors, contact the coordinator of the corresponding major program or contact engdept@sfsu.edu.

Minor in English and American Literature (15 units)

Required courses (9 units):

  • ENG 480GW: Junior Seminar - GWAR
  • ENG 460 OR 461: Literature in English to 1800 or Literature in English Since 1800
  • ENG 640: Global Texts and Practices

Electives (6 units):

  • Select two courses in Literature approved by advisor (one may be lower-division).

Minor in Linguistics (15 units)

Required courses (12 units):

  • ENG 420: Introduction to the Study of Language
  • ENG 421: Syntax
  • ENG 424: Phonology and Morphology
  • ENG 425: Language in Context

Select one of the following courses (3 units):

  • ENG 422: History of the English Language
  • ENG 423: Language Analysis for Language Teachers
  • ENG 426: Second Langauge Acquistion

 

Minor in Professional Writing and Rhetoric (15 units)

Required courses (9 units):

  • ENG 402: Introduction to Professional Writing and Rhetoric
  • ENG 540: Professional Editing
  • ENG 545: Visual Rhetoric and Document Design

Skills Electives - choose two of the following (6 units):

  • ENG 200: Writing Practices in Professional Contexts    
  • ENG 470: Writing Professional Promotions 
  • ENG 471: Writing Technical Documentation   
  • ENG 490: Grantwriting    
  • ENG 585: Technical Writing Online    
  • ENG 618: Individual and Team Writing
