I have been teaching for the English department for several years, and prior to that I taught for the Creative Writing department at SFSU. I hold BA and MA degrees in English, and an MFA in creative writing. In a previous existence I worked as a technician engineer, and I also hold the UK equivalent of an undergraduate degree in electrical and electronic engineering.

My goal as a teacher of English composition is to help students develop their written communication skills, with an emphasis on specific skills that students need to succeed at SF State, irrespective of their chosen major. I focus on helping students develop communication skills that we will need throughout our lives. I believe that effective communication also requires effective critical thinking skills, especially with regards to reading and listening to other people’s perspectives and ideas, so we can really understand where other people we encounter are coming from. So, in addition to writing skills, I focus quite a lot on listening and thinking processes in my teaching.

In between semesters I like to travel, and I try to fit in at least one interstate road trip on my motorcycle, usually involving at least one of America’s national parks.
