Ph.D., Duke University. Middle English Literature

Professor Paulson specializes in late medieval English literature, with a focus on poetry and drama. She teaches courses on medieval and renaissance drama; the poetry of Geoffrey Chaucer, William Langland, and the Gawain poet; the visionary writing of Julian of Norwich and Margery Kempe; and political and religious writing surrounding the Peasant’s Revolt of 1381 and Lollard heresy. Her articles and book reviews on medieval literature appear in scholarly journals such as the American Historical Review, Journal of Medieval and Early Modern Studies, Speculum, and Theatre Survey. She is the author of Theater of the Word: Selfhood in the English Morality Play (University of Notre Dame Press, 2019).  Professor Paulson’s current book project examines medieval understandings of intelligence and its opposite from the perspective of disability studies.
