Teaching Assistant/Teaching Observer Opportunities

The English Department offers a variety of teaching assistant/teaching observer opportunities for graduate students.

Graduate Teaching Associates

Each year the English department offers a number of paid Graduate Teaching Associate (GTA) positions. Each GTA teaches one undergraduate course, either in our Writing Program or in our Composition for Multilingual Students (CMS) program.  Selection is competitive; students typically GTA during the second year of their MA program, after having taken completed graduate-level pedagogy courses, either through MA English (TESOL); MA English (Composition); and/or the Certificate in Teaching Composition.  Please contact Mark Roberge (roberge@sfsu.edu) for more information. 

Linguistics Teaching Assistantships

The MA English Linguistics program has linguistics teaching assistant opportunities. These positions are available for one semester, when a student enrolls in the Teaching Practicum course, usually in the third or fourth semester of the program. TESOL Teaching Assistantships

Literature Teaching Observer Practicum, ENG 803

The TO Practicum provides opportunities for students to gain pedagogical experience by observing the teaching of a course in the English Department taught by Literature Program faculty. Students learn and develop pedagogical skills through professor-led workshops, class observation, and supervised development of a lesson plan, a dream syllabus, and a positionality/teaching philosophy statement. Volunteers and Paid Tutoring Opportunities

SF State offers graduate students a variety of paid and volunteer tutoring opportunities at the Tutoring and Academic Support Center (TASC).

 

Scholarships and Fellowships

Graduate Literature Association

The Graduate Literature Association (GLA) is the student organization for the M.A. in Literatures. The GLA organizes social activities, academic and career workshops, and scholarly conferences and publishes Interpretations, a student-edited academic journal.
