I’ve been teaching first and second year writing classes since 2008. I see my role as supporting and guiding students at the start of their educational journeys.  I started my own journey as a writing teacher at UC Berkeley where I earned a B.A. in English and was inspired by my teachers’ love of language to become a teacher myself.  I then went to grad school here at San Francisco State where I earned an M.A. in English Literature and Certificates in Teaching Composition and Post Secondary Reading. I’ve been teaching here ever since.  I’ve also taught at several colleges in the Bay Area, including De Anza Community College.

My goal as a teacher is to help students see how they too can use language to gain a greater understanding of themselves and the world, and to communicate their understanding and thinking with others.  When I teach writing, the students’ work is always the starting point, so students in my classes engage in peer review and the writing process frequently.  I teach my students how to give more helpful feedback and how to use feedback to support their purposes as writers. I tell my students that the key to success is just showing up and practicing everyday, even when it’s hard or you are unsure of yourself.  Students appreciate that I make the classroom a safe place for them to do this practice, make mistakes, and grow.  This is a philosophy I follow not just in my professional life, but in  my hobbies as well: playing guitar, songwriting, sewing, knitting and yoga.
